Rev. Fr. Brian D’Souza Asst Parish Priest
Born on the 8th of February 1969, Fr Brian D’Souza is the 7th child of eight children that God had blessed Anselm Patrick D’Souza (deceased) and Rosemary Joan De Silva. His family practised the recital of daily rosary and occasionally, his father would introduce charismatic prayer. After the death of his father, the D’Souzas still remained strongly bonded – a testimony to the saying, “A family that prays together stays together”.
From young, he learnt to serve his parents, his elders and visitors at home. When he was old enough, he joined the Altar Boys’ society and went on to teach catechism. At 15, he realized that being a nominal Sunday Catholic was not sufficient to develop a strong relationship with the Lord. Upon reflection and prayer, he aimed to get more active in church and decided to join the seminary after National Service. To pass time before entering the seminary, Fr Brian worked as a service technician. His family had no objection to his decision as they felt it was only natural for him to head in this direction.
Seminary life was not at all smooth sailing. He had had his fair share of peer problems and being a practical person, he struggled with the theory aspect of studies. Nevertheless, he was ordained on the 7th of July 2002 at Our Lady Star of the Sea parish.
To him, entering the seminary is another process of discernment, where one learns if God has a calling for him. His advice to young people who might be interested in religious life is to lead a holy life, which is regular prayer sessions, at least quarterly confessions and get involved in church activities. Don’t be afraid to approach a priest or a nun as they can be the voice of God.
